The Niagara Escarpment cuts diagonally across Halton Region from south-west to north-east. Above the Escarpment the landscape is dominated by hundreds of small to medium sized wetlands, all of which are part of provincially signficant wetland complexes and thus fully protected from development.
Urban development is concentrated in the southern part of the region, along the Lake Ontario waterfront, in Burlington and Oakville, and to a lesser extent Georgetown (Town of Halton Hills) in the north-east corner. Substantial land around Milton has been designated to accommodate future growth, as well as along the north side of the Highway 407 corridor.
Lands situated between the south end of Milton and the north end of Oakville are predominantly agricultural at present, but some are proposed for development. The Trafalgar Moraine in this area, as well as associated wetlands and woodlots, may result in a higher level of protection.
